Empowering New York’s Filipino Migrant Workers: Damayan Hosts Medicaid & Managed Care Workshop in Queens
Queens, NY – Last weekend, Damayan members gathered in Woodside for a Medicaid and Managed Care Workshop. The event addressed the critical need for healthcare access among uninsured New Yorkers while highlighting the ongoing progress of the Tulungan Health initiative.
The day kicked off with an energetic atmosphere, featuring a spirited icebreaker and a Father’s Day photo booth dedicated to honoring our immigrant fathers. This set the stage for an informative main presentation led by Bailey Hu, a senior policy analyst from the NYC Department of Health.
Hu provided essential updates on the evolving health insurance landscape in New York City, covering Medicaid, the Essential Plan, and other accessible options. She also presented case studies for participants to gain a clearer understanding of eligibility and how to navigate these essential services for themselves and their families.
Damayan also shared the latest survey results from Tulungan, a health initiative specifically designed to help Filipino migrant workers access healthcare. The presentation inspired a new wave of volunteers who stepped forward to support our health clinics, ensuring more workers are connected to the care they deserve.
Beyond healthcare, the workshop served as a space for reflection on current events. Attendees reflected and learned about International Domestic Workers Day, and engaged in meaningful dialogue regarding the true political and economic independence of the Philippines in honor of Philippine Independence Day. The event concluded on a high note with a joyful Zumba session.
