Damayan Hosts Successful Coverage Workshop and Launches Tulungan Project
Two weekends ago, Damayan members attended a Health Care and Coverage Workshop in Woodside, NY, addressing uninsured New Yorkers and launching the Tulungan (Health Collaboration) Project.
Theresa Doherty, MPA, NYC Care Director of Community Affairs, spoke about NYC Care. As a proud Filipino American, she offered essential guidance on health coverage for the uninsured, followed by a Q&A session.
Assemblymember Steven Raga attended, showing support for participants, primarily women and seniors, and discussing the New York Health Act, which would provide affordable, universal healthcare for New Yorkers.
Damayan’s former executive director, Linda Oalican, discussed the War on Iran and its impact on Filipino migrant workers in the Middle East and the U.S., and how the conflict has strained families and the nation economically. Oalican urged migrant workers to support anti-war efforts for their families and homeland.
Participants explored the evolution of Damayan’s health rights program and learned about Tulungan. Facilitators gathered preliminary data through a project survey to shape Tulungan.
The day concluded with a community raffle sponsored by Glam-Amor Skin NYC and Fine Arches, awarding about 30 winners facial treatments, a Vitamin C IV drip, and eyebrow lamination.
