Workers Feel Empowered During May Free Legal Clinic
Queens, NY – Two weekends ago, Damayan and community members participated in the Free Legal Clinic in Woodside, NY. The attendees consulted labor and immigration attorneys from TakeRoot Justice and New York Legal Assistance Group - NYLAG. At the conclusion of the clinic, workers felt assured that they held the power to fight for their immigration and labor rights—for justice.
Damayan migrant worker leaders and staff mainly led the event. A Damayan Domestic Worker Fellow presented the Damayan Orientation and emphasized the mission, services, and our organizing principles. A Damayan staff also discussed Damayan’s case management process so workers fully understand all the roles, expectations, and agreements. Another Damayan worker leader did a brief Know Your Immigrant Rights as well as how we can protect ourselves and our community. The worker leader also shared her own experience of running her trafficking case.
Damayan will hold the next members meeting on Saturday, June 21, 10am-4pm, in Woodside, NY. A guest attorney will give immigration updates, and another guest speaker will discuss the impact of losing Medicaid and how we can organize our community around it.
