Building Financial Knowledge in Damayan’s Financial Empowerment Academy Part 2
Woodside, NY - Last November, Damayan workers gathered in Woodside for the second session of Damayan’s Financial Empowerment Academy, led by Pedro Salazar of Urban Upbound in partnership with the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP).
Participants learned about financial literacy, mainly managing debt, understanding credit, accessing free financial counseling and navigating the banking system. They also shared personal stories, reflecting on their own financial journeys and challenges as immigrant workers.
Beyond financial education, the gathering became a lively forum for dialogue on current issues in both the United States and the Philippines. Attendees discussed the recent elections for New York City mayor, the government shutdown, and reminders of their immigrant rights. The conversation also turned to the long history of corruption in the Philippines, with participants sharing ideas on how overseas workers can contribute to meaningful change back home.
Through spaces like the Financial Empowerment Academy, Damayan continues to build knowledge, solidarity, and collective power among Filipino workers, advancing the fight for economic equity and justice.
Damayan extends its gratitude to Pedro Salazar, Urban Upbound, and the DCWP team for their continued partnership in empowering low-income Filipino workers in NYC.
