Community Care Shines: Damayan’s Second Free Health Screening Draws Crowd

Free Health Screening and Mammogram held in Little Manila, Queens

Woodside, NY — Last Saturday, more than 100 Damayan members and community participants gathered in Little Manila for the second installment of Damayan’s popular Free Health Screening, organized with Pinoys of New York’s street pop-up festival.

Marginalized Filipino workers, mostly women and seniors, received free blood pressure and glucose screenings at Damayan tents under the 7 train. In the Tagpuan café courtyard, participants accessed stroke screening, individual doctor consultations, physiatrist evaluations, and hands-on sessions with physical therapists. Many joined or renewed Damayan memberships.

Damayan organizers, members, and volunteers reached out to domestic workers, labor trafficking survivors, pop-up vendors, and neighbors in need of care. One church pastor even drove his constituents so they could participate in the event.

“Thank you so much for your wonderful service. I am truly at a loss for words to express my gratitude for your kindness and hospitality to all of us who deeply appreciate your tireless efforts and sacrifices,” texted one grateful participant.

Big thanks to Tagpuan NYC, Pinoys of New York, the Philippine Association of Physiatrists in America (PAPA), and NYS Assemblymember Steven Raga’s office. Special appreciation to our Board, staff, fellows, members, and volunteers.

While 25 women registered for the No-Cost Mobile Mammogram, a technical issue limited services to six. Damayan has rescheduled the mammogram for Sunday, November 16, 9am–5pm, and will contact those still in need. Appointments are only confirmed after receiving a schedule from our partner.
