Communications coordinator
We are looking for an experienced and excellent Communications Coordinator with a passion to support the organizing of low-wage migrant Filipino workers in New York City. This positions aims to support our programs and campaigns to fight anti-Asian hate and violence, and to combat labor and human trafficking. This position focuses on creating and elevating awareness, interest, and motivation to engage and mobilize our stakeholders–the marginalized workers, allies and funders to support and sustain the work of Damayan.
The Communications Coordinator is someone who has a feel for the community’s heartbeat–what affects them, what matters to them, and what they feel strongly about.This person is someone who has a keen understanding of the current landscape, but who is also capable of doing a deeper analysis of our community’s circumstances.
The ideal candidate is a communicator as much as a collaborator, able to develop from other team members’ work, and make opportunities out of changes and challenges.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Grow Damayan’s social media presence by creating and writing content for social media, working closely with the Program Director and the Executive Director in crafting key messaging
Managing our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube accounts
Keeping abreast with communications from allies, supporters, and members and helping build our followers
Design and create event flyers and invites, and campaign materials
Update and maintain Damayan’s website
Ensure that basic Damayan communication materials are updated, printed and distributed (brochures and palm cards for workers and allies)
Create, publish, and create a dissemination plan for the Damayan newsletter, to be released at least quarterly
Write event communications, campaign and program write-ups, and analysis pieces
Build Damayan’s press contacts and update our press lists: connect with reporters about our work, especially about current events that affect the community like Covid, trafficking and hate violence stories; research additional media outlets
Build our allies and supporters email list
Take photos to document events
External Communication support during events
Qualifications:
Genuine interest in Damayan’s mission and political alignment
Compassionate, and has a strong commitment to racial equity and social justice
Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
Ability to understand and speak basic Tagalog
Proficiency with online marketing tools, social media platforms, and publishing software
Meticulous attention to detail and excellent time/task management skills
Ability to respond adeptly to rapidly changing priorities and successfully manage multiple initiatives at once
Ability to work effectively and independently but also as a member of a team
Strong interpersonal skills with an outgoing and open personal style

OTHER EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
Full-time, 40 hours a week position
Work hours: Tue to Sat, 11:00 - 7:00 or 12:00 - 8:00 PM, but employee should have flexibility for schedule changes during special events
Salary range: $40,000-44,000, commensurate to experience
