In the early 2010s, domestic workers, taxi drivers, restaurant workers, nail salon workers, and day laborers organized to fight for state protections and labor rights. This was part of a broader effort to ensure that workers who did not have employer benefits and were not covered by federal law, had state protections.

Damayan along with other member organizations of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) campaigned for seven years to pass the NY Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. In 2010, the bill passed in a landmark victory for domestic workers in the US. The legislation requires employers to pay overtime pay, guarantee paid rest days, and ensure protections from sexual and racial harassment.
