The immigration status of a domestic worker employed by a diplomat is contingent on their continued employment with a given diplomat: if their employment is terminated or if they leave their job, they will become undocumented. Foreign diplomats are excluded from most criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits, due to diplomatic immunity, exacerbating power imbalances.
Damayan launched the Justice for Marichu Campaign in support of Marichu Baoanan, a domestic worker trafficked by former Philippine ambassador to the United Nations Lauro Baja. The first successful legal case brought by a domestic worker trafficked by an ambassador, Marichu won her T-visa, a humanitarian relief visa, and her civil case, and was reunited with her spouse and children.
