US imperialism, colonialism, and military intervention lead to greater impoverishment and destruction of livelihoods in many parts of the world. Workers have little option but to seek employment elsewhere. In this way, migrant labor, poverty, imperialism, militarism, and racial inequality are interconnected.
In 2003, Damayan and the Network in Solidarity with the People of the Philippines (NISPOP) founded the Justice Not War Campaign to show Filipino opposition to the US-led wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq. The campaign highlighted the connection to US imperialist intervention in the Philippines and Palestine, and Damayan’s anti-imperialist and internationalist stance.
“There was this extra level of xenophobia and Islamophobia and also this idea that it was good we (US) were striking back, you know, this pro war (ideas). So it is important to stand up and criticize the war on terror and say that this is actually an oppressive thing. And yeah, just to feel like you're trying to resist that because it was really hard, you know, right after 911 happened, I remember the next day thinking, oh no, this country's gonna do something terrible.
“We could use the money that's being thrown away in all of these weapons or all of these wars, you could use that to hire millions of workers, hire millions of people at good union jobs, to be able to help us set up our society, so that it actually is benefiting our people. We could set up better transportation systems, we could get some high speed rail, we could fix our infrastructure, make sure our bridges are not falling down, we could fix our subway system, make sure that they're not flooded every time there's rain, that it's not like pouring through the walls. There's just... all these things are so solvable. They're so solvable, but they're putting all of our money into death and destruction. And they're destroying our rainforests, our forests and Atlanta for the crop city. Right? Another place to be able to train these mercenaries to prevent people from defending their rights and actually wanting like making a change - wanting different things, like wanting a better society, like our public schools. God, there's so much we could do!”
