Happy Juneteenth

On this Juneteenth, Damayan stands in solidarity with the Black community as we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865. Damayan also draws on their militant fight for racial justice and against both White supremacy and US capitalism.

At Damayan, we understand that Filipino migrant workers in the US have a shared struggle with African Americans against intersecting layers of oppression—systemic racism, worker exploitation, sexism, and more. America aims to pit Asian or Filipino workers and Black communities against each other. We will overcome this challenge through solidarity work and political education, where we empower each other and challenge the systems of White supremacy, capitalism, and neoliberalism that continue to plunder both the Black community and poor countries like the Philippines, pushing our people to migrate and become victims of labor trafficking.

Drawing on the true essence of Juneteenth, Damayan stands with African Americans and all oppressed communities in our shared struggle for racial, economic, and social justice. Let us fight together in creating a society that honors the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. Happy Juneteenth!
