May Day

May 1 is International Labor Day and in the Philippines, it is also the official Labor Day or “Araw ng mga Manggagawa”. As an organization of Filipino migrant workers, Damayan stands in solidarity with all the workers of the world, particularly with all the Filipino migrant workers around the globe. On this day, we celebrate our victories in defeating labor trafficking, wage theft and raising the labor standards and advancing workers’ rights and dignity,  especially  for migrant Filipino domestic workers.

However, we recognize that until we address the root causes of Filipino forced migration, and end the Labor Export Program of the Philippines, Filipino migrant workers will always become vulnerable to labor and human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation and oppression in foreign land.

Damayan supports a truly independent Philippines that serves Filipinos, especially the migrant workers. We aspire that the Philippines breaks free from US neocolonial control that has made the country underdeveloped and dependent on the migrant Filipinos’ financial remittances. May this Labor Day be a day for liberty for all workers! Mapagpalayang Araw ng mga Manggagawa!
