Damayan at El Shaddai Church
Damayan, in keeping with its mission to organize low-wage Filipino migrant workers, and with the support of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), has been doing outreach work since the last two Sundays of December to reach more Filipino low-wage workers in New York City.

The El Shaddai church warmly welcomed Damayan’s Case Manager Lydia Catina and Special Projects Coordinator Mayra Bermeo who recently took part in their Sunday mass services at their chapters in Flushing and Union Square, Manhattan, and met with the church's congregation. Both gave a brief introduction of Damayan, its mission, vision, and a presentation about immigration and interaction guidelines with ICE. For its Filipino churchgoers who are migrant workers in New York City, they are familiar with ICE and how interactions with them are almost synonymous to arrests and deportations. Damayan discussed its Know Your Rights training to community members, to help equip them should they ever face interactions with ICE and to help them understand the agency’s main mandate.
Damayan also gave presentations on other relevant topics like immigration rights and how to avoid immigration fraud, as well as service orientations like IDNYC, NYC CARE, and public charge.
