Damayan's Free Health Screening

Positioned strategically along Roosevelt avenue in Queens, where many of our community members pass en route to their work or their homes, the area in front of Amazing Grace restaurant was a bustling hub of activity last Saturday. The Health Screening was conducted by practitioners from the Institute of Family Health in New York. More than 100 attendees received blood pressure checks, primary care referrals, and tote bags as well as Covid test kits for free. For Damayan members and community members, whose days and weeks are spent working and working with the singular goal of providing for their families back home in the Philippines, their health takes a backseat. That, coupled with the lack of accessible health care, makes them constantly vulnerable and at-risk. Nowhere was this more deathly apparent than during the Covid-19 pandemic, where hundreds of community members were subjected to the threats of the pandemic, without any support and safety net. That is why Damayan has taken the role of advocacy in offering healthcare support to our community members, for as we fight to work with dignity, we can only do so if we help keep each other healthy.
