DAMAYAN COMMUNITY ORGANIZER JOB DESCRIPTION

Damayan Migrant Workers Association, Inc is an immigrant workers based and led 501 c 3 organization in NYC. Our mission is to educate, organize and mobilize low wage Filipino workers to fight for their labor, health, gender and im/migration rights; to contribute to the building of the domestic workers movement for fair labor standards, dignity and justice towards economic and social justice for all.

Majority of our members and leaders are migrant domestic workers and a significant number are survivors of labor and human trafficking. Our community is experiencing severe anxiety and uncertainty in the current anti immigrant environment. However, we believe that workers hold the collective power to resist, fight and win. Although inherent, however, this power can only be unlocked through organizing.

With resources from partner foundations, we are seeking to hire a Community Organizer that will lead and coordinate Damayan’s efforts to protect and to defend vulnerable community members through organizing. Below are the job description and qualifications that we are looking for:

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Outreach and Base building (LEAD)

Form the Project leadership team (PLT) composed of Damayan leaders and trafficking survivors, to plan and implement the following:

  • Monthly street outreach activities

  • Identify 75 high risk Damayan members and train them in safety and emergency planning

  • Organize community watch teams in four identified communities

  • Organize monthly house meetings

 

Immigration Know Your Rights Trainings (LEAD)

  • Organize Know Your Rights (KYR) trainings, including three large quarterly ones

  • Secure and build relationships with trafficking and labor attorneys as trainers in the KYR

  • Gather KYR materials and create appropriate binders

  • Research, develop and incorporate to KYR trainings, the rights of Filipino migrants based on US and international laws

 

Networking and Coalition Building (LEAD)

  • Form a Response Network encompassing the four identified local areas

  • Represent and engage Damayan as a core partner in the Hate Free Zone

 

Legal clinics (SUPPORT)

  • Provide support and assistance to case manager/s to organize legal clinics

  • Prepare needed paperwork/materials for case intakes



 

Misc. (SUPPORT)

  • Support digital and organizational security

 

Work Evaluation

  • Create a one year and monthly work plans incorporating the above job description and details as approved by the ED

  • Create monthly report and weekly reports

  • Do mid year and year end qualitative evaluations


 

Minimum Education, Experience and Skills Requirement

  • At least 2 years of college education and/or equivalent experience

  • At least 2 years experience in organizing immigrant workers, preferably in urban spaces

  • Proficient in microsoft office and email communications

  • Able to create outreach materials including but not limited to flyers, call lists,  etc.

 

Language Proficiency

Fluency in Tagalog (Filipino Language) and English

 

Job Type:

Full-Time, co-terminus with funding

 

Job Location:

Manhattan, NY and fieldwork in Queens, NY
