Health and Gender
The majority of Filipino low wage workers are women domestic workers who are middle age and suffer from basic health problems like high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. Almost all of them lack health insurance. A significant number of these women also become victims and survivors of domestic violence from husbands or partners. To address these two kinds of problems, Damayan put together our health and gender programs where we do the following:
1) Know your rights trainings or open school to give the basic knowledge on what their health rights are, regardless of health insurance and immigration status, and what they can do to protect and help themselves when they become victims of domestic violence;
2) Peer trainings to enable workers to provide correct information and assistance to fellow workers with health and gender problems;
3) Case management. Damayan has helped two of its members to get Victims Against Women Act (VAWA) immigration protection, visas under the VAWA, and bring their abusive husbands or partners to justice.
